Part of the southeast region of Brazil, São Paulo is named after Saint Paul of Tarsus. With a population over 44 milion, São Paulo is both the most populated state in Brazil, as well as the most populated sub-national entity in all of the americas.
São Paulo has the highest GDP among all Brazilian states, is the world's largest production of orange juice, sugar and ethanol, and houses the largest industrial, scientific and technological production in the country — with the largest national research and development hub, with many of the strongest universities and institutes. In 2020, São Paulo's economy accounted for over 30% of the total wealth produced in the country — gaining the name "locomotive of Brazil" — as such, the cities of São Paulo are among the richest and most developed in the country. If São Paulo was a sovereign country, its nominal GDP would be the 21st largest in the world (2020 estimate).
São Paulo is also the most sought after Brazilian tourist destination by national and international tourists due to its natural beauty, historical and cultural heritage
