Cicada Hawk

Sphecius speciosus

Order: Hymenoptera >>> Family: Crabronidae(Dru Drury, 1773)

Commonly called Cicada Killer or Cicada Hawk. Any species of crabronid which preys on cicadas may be called this, though in North America it normally references S. speciosus specifically. Eastern cicada killer would be more accurate, as there are other species.

Day 1: The Burrow
Another Burrow

When monitoring Red Imported Fire Ants in the garden, I noticed a large new burrow. It has rained almost every day, and each day, the burrow is repaired, but I have yet to see its inhabitant.

It was not the only burrow. Shining a light into a different one, something moved! I moved back and waited, and waited, and waited.

It was only the shadow of a root. These holes didn't show any fresh dirt after the rains. Abandoned? Not from the same insect?

Abandonado?

Day 2
Day 3

Each day, fresh dirt, but no insect. Perhaps the insect is nocturnal?

Talvez o inseto seja noturno?

Finally, success. The insect is very active at night. Its huge, about the size of my thumb. It leaves the burrow walking backward, pushing out the dirt with its butt and hind legs.

Armed with only my phone, I tried to document it. It's hard to tell what it is due to the lack of light. The dark wings almost look like a 'Palmetto Bug'. Which is it?

Finalmente, sucesso. O inseto é muito ativo à noite. É enorme, do tamanho do meu polegar.

Day 4: A Sighting!
'Palmetto Bug'
Day 5: Sighting with Light

Today, I was prepared. I brought lighting and my real camera. We can tell it is definately not the 'Palmetto Bug'.

It would push dirt out, and then quickly goes back to the burrow. A few minutes later, it'd appear again and do the same thing. It took maybe 30 minutes of waiting before it came out far enough to photo the rest of it.

Hoje eu estava preparado.

After discussions with another observer, and uncertainty about the species, now that I finally got clear photos of this critter, it definately looks like the Cicada Killer.
